The Fourth Day

If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you'll always remember.

The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your new friend.

You may have spent weeks deciding, or asking opinions of many vets, or chosen that silly looking mutt or kitten in the shelter - simply because something in its eyes reached your heart.

But when you bring that chosen pet home, and watch it explore, and claim its special place in your home - and when you feel it brush against you for the first time - it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through the many years to come.

The second day will occur eight or nine or ten years later.

It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth.

You will see slow deliberate steps where you once saw energy.

And you will see sleep where you once saw activity.

So you will begin to adjust your friend's diet - and you may add a pill or two to their food.

And you may feel a growing fear deep within yourself, which bodes of a coming emptiness.

And you will feel this uneasy feeling, on and off, until the third day arrives.

And on this day - if your friend and God have not decided for you, then you will be faced with making a decision of your own - on behalf of your lifelong friend, and with the guidance of your own deepest Spirit.

But whichever way your friend eventually leaves you - you will feel as alone as a single star in the dark night sky.

If you are wise, you will let the tears flow as freely and as often as they must. And if you are typical, you will find that not many in your circle of family or human friends will be able to understand your grief, or comfort you.

But if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through the many joyfilled years, you may find that a soul - a bit smaller in size than your own - seems to walk with you, at times, during the lonely days to come.

And at moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary to happen, you may feel something brush against your leg - very very lightly.

And looking down at the place where your dear, perhaps dearest, friend used to lay - you will remember those three significant days.

The memory will most likely be painful, and leave an ache in your heart.

As time passes the ache will come and go as if it has a life of its own.

You will both reject it and embrace it, and it may confuse you.

If you reject it, it will depress you.

If you embrace it, it will deepen you.

Either way, it will still be an ache.

But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day when - along with the memory of your pet - and piercing through the heaviness in your heart - there will come a realization that belongs only to you.

It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with each animal we have loved, and lost.

This realization takes the form of a Living Love.

Like the heavenly scent of a rose that remains after the petals have wilted, this Love will remain and grow - and be there for us to remember.

It is a Love we have earned.

It is the legacy our pets leave us when they go.

And it is a gift we may keep with us as long as we live.

It is a Love which is ours alone.

And until we ourselves leave, perhaps to join our Beloved Pets -

It is a Love that we will always possess.

I have solely dedicated this blog to animals, I feel quility if I post anything else on here. They are so dear to my heart.

So with that said, this is my beloved animal blog

How could you not love that cute little bundle having a bath

He is just so happy, that we all love animals

I love to post about an animal that is in need of a home, animal rescue groups and saving the seals and the elephants and the bears and any animal plight that is emailed to me or that I find on the internet.

They need the attention and the help, and I feel that maybe my little space here on the World Wide Web, can help, even if it saves one animal or gets the attention of a group of people, I will know that I have done the best that I can do, I can't turn my back on the issues at hand, and I hope I can touch someone elses life with my passion and love for animals.

My dream is to have everyone on this earth of ours to be caring and compassionate to our animal friends.

It isn't always about giving money to groups, although believe me many groups that do rescue need the money to keep doing what they are doing. If you don't have extra money, remember to help out, you can volunteer in a rescue group, you can sew snugglies for animals in rescue shelters, or spread the word to adopt a shelter animal, if you see a stray dog or cat, don't just turn your head, call someone or take them yourself and find their owners. If you see abuse with an animal report it RIGHT AWAY to the local authorities, if you don't, they will never get out of the situation they are in, and most likely they will die. If you see a starving animal, call the authorities, there is no reason in the world an animal should be starving to death. Also this summer in the hot and humid weather, don't walk away from an animal in a car , call the police, it only takes minutes for an animal to die in a closed in car.

Some people need to be educated on animals and the care that they need and require. I promise not to talk always about the bad things, but to also let you know about the happy and good things that happen with the animals. I also will be posting funny pictures and quotes, so that this blog doesn't become depressing, I want you all to visit here and be enlightened and hopefully just maybe a little more educated on the animals issues that surround us all. I know I am always getting educated myself with the issues at hand.

My love of primitives and early american life have taken a back seat to this blog. So with much consideration I have decided to open another blog ( like I have time) and I will dedicate that solely to PRIMITIVE AND EARLIES. It's not open yet and I don't have a name yet, I have a few different names in mind, but have yet to decide on one.

I am always on the lookout for handmade earlies, antiques, antique shops, primitive shops and decorating my home in the early style. But, more about that when my blog is open and running. And, I will sell some items on the blog, from time to time, when I find a good piece that is in need of a home.

I hope you will continue to check this blog and keep updated on all the animal issue's that arise or that I post about in my daily life. I have 3 dogs and 6 cats, and they truly are a blessing and a big part of our family. I can't imagine my home without an animal, since I was a little girl we have had animals of all kinds, but most always a dog or two or five, oops ,sometimes a few too many, for some of the people in the house to be comfortable with. I was one who was always wanting to bring home the stray. My kids have been brought up to love animals and to understand that some people don't love animals as much as other do, so that's where we step in and try our darn best to help.

One Million Pets May Lose Homes - HELP

Economic Forecast: One Million Pets May Lose Homes

The current U.S. financial crisis has the potential to grow into a serious animal welfare issue, warns Executive Vice President of ASPCA Programs, Dr. Stephen Zawistowski. As households across the country are caught in the economic downturn, an estimated 500,000 to one million cats and dogs are at risk of becoming homeless.
“According to national financial estimates, approximately one in 171 homes in the U.S. is in danger of foreclosure due to the subprime mortgage crisis,” Zawistowski observes. “Considering that approximately 63 percent of U.S. households have at least one pet, hundreds of thousands are in danger of being abandoned or relinquished to animal shelters.”
To avoid or ease the heartbreak of losing an animal companion due to economic hardship, the ASPCA urges pet owners who are faced with foreclosure to think of alternatives ahead of time:
See if friends, family or neighbors can provide temporary foster care for their pet until they get back on their feet.
If they are moving into a rental property, get written permission in advance that pets are allowed.
Contact their local animal shelter, humane society or rescue group before they move. If a shelter agrees to take the pet, they should provide medical records, behavior information and anything else that might help the pet find a new home.
“Everyone is being affected by the current economic crisis in some way,” says ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “Community animal shelters and rescue groups across the country may soon be seeing an increase in homeless pets or a decrease in the donations they rely on.”
We urge ASPCA News Alert readers to help in any way that you can:
Adopt a homeless pet.
Donate used blankets, towels or even tennis balls to your local animal shelter.
Foster adoptable animals until they find their forever homes.
Help community members who may be struggling to take care of their pets.

Happy New Year ~ 2009

The Christmas Holidays are over, Whew, I made it thru another year.

Mailed my cards to family and friends far away.

Wrapped our presents on Christmas Eve with my daughter NiCollette.

On Christmas Eve we made our Breakfast Casserole and French Toast Casserole, and all our pies and cakes.

Christmas morning, we slept in until 9. Put our breakfast in the oven, turned on the coffee and set the table for breakfast, after breakfast we went up to the 3rd floor of our home and opened presents by the Christmas Tree.

After we exchanged our gifts, we headed back downstairs to get ready for Christmas Dinner.

We cooked Prime Rib Roast, a Spiral Ham.

Baked potatoes with sour cream, bacon bits and cheese

Green Bean Casserole, butternut squash, buttered corn rolls and butter

Desserts: Pecan pie, chocolate creme pie, cheesecake and Red Velvet Cake

After dinner we talked with family and friends and relaxed.

What a wonderful day we had, I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Another year is upon us, I hope for good health for family and friends a wonderful happy and prosperous New Year

And remember on New Years Eve when you return home, have something in your hands when you enter your door, it is an old custom that my mother always followed, it means you will have a prosperous New Year

Snow Storm is coming to our area, tomorrow, and its a BIG one. We were just hit with an ice storm that left many many towns in New England devasted. Some are still without power. Everyone is geering up for the storm, that's what we do in New England.

School has already been set to let the kids out 3 hours earlier than usual. We go grocery shopping and stock up, because you never know the stores might not open ever again. Shovels are waiting at the doors, the salt is ready to pour on the steps and the walks. The snow blowers have all been gased up and the snow plows you see waiting at the shopping malls and in everyones driveways. We get the cord wood ready for the fire places, the woodstoves and we then enjoy those wonderful roaring fires at the Hearth

This happens every year in New England, and we do it the same way every year. Us New Englanders are very conservative and we like to be ready for what every comes our way. If were not ready then we are devastated.

We know we will survive we are survivors, it usually doesn't just happen once a year, it sometimes happens over and over again. And, then we have next year, and the next year, and as long as we live in New England we will endure the change of seasons. They say if you stand in one place long enough the weather will change. We do have beautiful seasons to enjoy, my favorite is Fall. I grew up in Orlando Florida so I'm not much of a winter person, but I do take it all in stride and try to make the best of the winter. We tend to hibernate during the winter months as the bears do. I like to sew and hook my rugs and decorating is an all time favorite of mine.

It does look pretty when the snow is falling and right after, especially at Christmas time when the houses are all beautifully decorated for the Holidays.

It does get us in the Christmas Spirit. We all love a White Christmas. It seems if its not White, then something is missing. Well its time to bundle down and get ready for the White Winter Wonderland.

~CHRISTMAS IS COMING TO OUR HOME~

I'm almost finished decorating, I have put up a couple of tress and a few of my many Christmas items. I have so much Christmas stuff in boxes in the basement that I don't even bring it all out anymore. I sift through the boxes and every year I seem more selective in what I put out.

I seem to have gotton to be more of a purist with Christmas and decorating. I love to decorate with natural items from the outside. I cut pine from my own pine trees in my yard I bring in pinecones and of course the winter berries oh I love the red winter berries.

I have my little window lights in the windows, my old sleds outside resting on the steps as if someone had just got finished sledding.

I love the old early look of Christmas

Cotton Batting Santas, old mittens, old stockings on the mantel. Lots of my early pieces get a touch of pine to bring out the Christmas feel.

Next, I will go outside and put some white lights on my little old fence in the front yard with a roping of evergreen and some greens on the old sleds.

Bring out the old wool blankets to decorate with, old bowls filled with fresh pine, pomegrantes and oranges

Candy jars filled with old fashioned candy canes

And a wreath on the doors

and maybe if I'm lucky I will string another garland of fruit.

I'll post pictures as soon as it all looks festive

Voters passed Question 3, which phases out greyhound racing by 2010 at the few remaining Massachusetts racetracks. Racing dogs endure lives of terrible confinement, kept in small cages barely large enough to stand up or turn around for 20 or more hours per day. The dogs also suffer serious injuries in high-speed collisions on the track, including broken legs, head trauma and heart attacks. Fortunately, there's now a light at the end of the tunnel for these gentle dogs.

Disaster Planning For Pets: Do You Know What To Pack?
As residents of the southeast coast of Texas wait for Hurricane Ike's floodwaters to recede, and citizens of Louisiana and Florida continue to sort through storm wreckage, the message couldn't be clearer—now is the time to create emergency evacuation plans that include pets.
The ASPCA would like to offer the following list of essential items to pack for your animal companions in advance, should you be faced with evacuation:

*Pet first-aid kit and guide book

*3 to 7 days' worth of canned (pop-top) or dry food

*Disposable litter trays (aluminum roasting pans are perfect)

*Litter or paper toweling

*Liquid dish soap and disinfectant

*Disposable garbage bags for clean-up

*Dishes for food and water

*Extra harness and leash

*Photocopies of medical records

*Waterproof container with a two-week supply of any medicine your pet requires

* Bottled water—at least seven days' worth for each person and pet

* Traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier, ideally one for each pet

*Flashlight

*Blanket

*Recent photos of your pet(s)

*Pet Grab ‘N Go Bag (can be crucial to protecting your pet’s paperwork)

Reed Diffuser ~ Smells Soooo Goood!

I have been wanting one of these reed diffuser's for awhile, but the price of them was more than I wanted to spend. And, I didn't want anything cute, I wanted something plain. Today, I was at Wal-Mart, and I found these, a clear glass jar. I bought two, Lavendar and Apple-Cinnamon, and I tied twine around the top of this one. They smell really good. The price was only $4.97 each. They weren't in the candle section but with the oils. They had other ones but they were priced at $12.97 and they had flowers on the glass part, not something I wanted in my home. I quess if you look long and hard you finally get what you want.

THE ANIMALS ARE SAFE~From the Hurricane

Hurricane Gustave came and left, but not without leaving its mark. As all hurricane's do, they leave a path of destruction. But, what was learned from Katrina, will not be forgotton. This time people were evacuated early and without many problems, they found shelter, food and dry spaces. Those with pets, could not take them into the shelters, for reasons we can all understand. This time, the animal welfare people were there and ready for all the four legged friends, they had their plan thought out and ready to go into action. And that they did. They had places for the animals to go shelters - dry spaces, transporation to get the animals there, crates, food, water, and volunters to help take care of the animals. The shelter was nearby where the familes were staying so they could come and take care of their pets and visit with them, and let them know they did not abandon them. Thank God for all the wonderful and compassionate people who help out when times of trouble come in. These animals were not forgotton and I think that is so wonderful - it makes my heart feel good.

I was very worried about the animals during this storm and all storms that pass thru towns and cities. We all should do our part in our towns to train for a diaster, should it happen in our own town. Check at your local town hall or city hall. I know in my town we have training classes so those who want to help out will be trained. I spoke with our local animal control officer Leona, and I am going to sign-up for training in our town to help out with the animals. Your local animal control center also looks for blankets, towels and anything you can give that would be animal related. They like to keep a big stock pile of supplies

Help out if you can, by giving your old sheets, towels or blankets for the animals
Lets hope we never need to use our knowledge of a diaster in our own home town, but if need be, we need to be READY

It's really simple!

You will need:

1. A tree

2. Newspaper & tape

3. Spray Paint

First you need to bring everything OUTSIDE

Wrap the bottom of the tree in the newspaper and tape it closed. This is a picture of the tree before I painted it, my tree had pine cones on the branches, I cut the pine cones off, and saved them for another project, you could wire the pine cones back on after you paint the tree.

Open your can, shake and start spraying. I hold the bottom of the tree and rotate the tree making sure I spray all over and cover the tree really good, so none of the green is showing. I used almost a whole can of spray paint on these trees. My trees are about 2ft tall, they are the called Tahoe Trees. You could also spray the German Twig Trees, which I am going to try next, I have quite a few of them. These will take quite a few cans of spray paint.

Spray Paint, I bought my spray paint at Michaels, and used my 40% off coupon. The paint is by Design Master. I used "October Brown" also called Milk Chocolate #718

And for the other tree I used "Terra Cotta" #796

And here are the finished trees, I love them spray painted in these colors. I keep mine up year around and put tiny decorations on them according to the time of year it is. I have tiny beeswax candles that I put on with thin wire and I use the tiny seed lights with brown color wire

The tree below has the tiny seed lights, if you look close you can probably see them.

4. The 'Paw Slide' simply slide paws around baby and prepare for possible close-up

5. Finally if a camera is present you will need to execute the difficult and potential "hug, smile, and lean" so as to achieve the best photo quality.

Fall Cleaning and Moving Cupboards

I started my fall cleaning, actually I wanted to move some of my big pieces of furniture around, so while I did that I cleaned. This piece is now next to my refrigerator, When we built the house I didn't want a standard cabinet here, so we opted to use old pieces. This is a very early piece with all square nail construction. I would love to have some of my collections in here with the doors open for all to see, but my husband is a clutter nut and saves all kind of papers, and at the end of the day they go to the nearest available spot, and that use to be right here next to the refrigerator where this cupboard is now. The cupboard I had here previously let him do just that. But, I fixed that yesterday I moved that cupboard into the living room and this one to the kitchen. He came home from work yesterday and said OH, where do I put my stuff. I opened the door and said right here, and there is a nail to hang your keys up. I asked him if this was ok with him, he said it doesn't matter, I'm use to the furniture being moved around, nothing is ever where it was yesterday, it's like coming home to a different house every day. Well, I said not everyday, but just about.

And, this is what the inside looks like, the first 2 shelves are his, and the rest hold my large appliances .

Well, back to my fall cleaning and moving. And then, I'm going out to mow the lawn. I won't have time for it tomorrow, I'm going school shopping with my daughter.

The days are getting shorter, the nights are cooler. I love when you know fall is just around the corner. The sleeping is easy, the days are comfortable. We can start getting our homes decorated for the fall season. How much fun, is that! I love looking at peoples homes and seeing what they have done. Football games will start, and we will pull out our sweaters and scarfs to wear to the games. The leaves start to turn from their brilliant green to a assortment of beautiful brown & yellows. The apples will soon be ready. The corn fields are starting to be picked. Sunflowers are big and bright. Oh, and the pumpkins will be ready soon those big beautiful orange beauties. Rug hookers will be hooking again, and the sewing machines will be busy making all the wonderful decorations.

Feedsacks ~ Feedbags ~ Part of our Heritage

The thrifty farm wife quickly discovered that this cotton bag was a great source of utilitarian fabric to be used for dish cloths, diapers, nightgowns and other household uses. Manufacturers decided to take advantage of this and started offering sacks in various prints and solid colors as a marketing ploy to create loyalty. It would take three identical sacks to make a dress, for example, and the farmer just might be induced to buy more that way.
It was not hard for the farmer to purchase his goods in feedsacks. The flour industry consumed the largest share of the feedsack market with more than 42 percent. Sugar was next with 17 percent followed by feed, seeds, rice, and fertilizer. These feedsacks came in different sizes, and the quality of the cloth varied with the item it carried. Sugar sacks, for example, were much finer in weave. By 1914, sacks came in 10, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 pound sizes, although these sizes varied by manufacturer. President Roosevelt standardized sizes in 1937. A 50 pound feedsack measured 34 x 38 inches. A 100 pound sack measured 39 x 46.

These were used and still are used for pillowcases, quilts, sewing make-do's or just as they are, they are a wonderful part of our heritage.

How many Kitties?

Isn't this picture adorable. Too Cute. Can you count how many kitties there are? These were my cat Lacie's babies born last July 07, they are over a year old, I can't believe a year has already gone by. I kept two of them, the others went to loving forever homes, of course I had to screen the people first, you would have thought they were adopting babies, OH WAIT A MINUTE, they were adopting babies, so the screening was allowed, I wouldn't have it any other way. Lacie is going tomorrow to be spayed, she'll come home on Sunday. She wants to go outside so bad, but I 've told her not until she is spayed. NO more babies for her. Too hard finding loving homes for the kitties, and there are too many unwanted ones out there. We need to keep the population down, way down, and the only way is to Spay and Neuter our pets, and don't let them outside until that is done. My next trip will be to take the kitties to the vets.

Oh, I am so tired of the rain, we are getting lots of it. It seems to rain every day, and then the sun comes out. They say in New England if you blink the weather will change. Today we had hail, pouring rain, thunder and lightning and floods. It was quite a storm today. The rain came down so fast and hard. My dogs were trembling from the noise of the storm. I looked to my back yard and my neighbors yard was like a pond, and then to the side neighbor and their yard looked like a pond. My bark mulch was swimming away, and all the plastic underneath was showing. Here are a couple of pictures of the neighbors yards during the storm. I'm not complaining, I just wanted to share my day with you. I was running around taking pictures and my daughter said mom what are you doing, I said I want to take pictures for my Blog and her reply was ~ why it's not primitive !!!!!

Went for a Job Interview

WELL, I went for a job interview yesterday, for a Site Coordinator for an after school program.
I researched the program, read the polices and procedures manual that I found on-line, pondered what questions that they would ask me. I wanted to know as much about the position as I could before the interview.
I went over these questions and over them, I stressed myself out so much I couldn't sleep the night before the interview. I wasn't nervous going to the interview, which was strange, I was considerably calm, you see I thought I knew everything they were going to ask me after all I googled interview questions and figured what else could they ask me. They threw me for a loop with their interview questions, two of them interviewing me. Now I have worked with kindergarten children before, I ran my own daycare, and have run business's with my husband.
NONE, of their questions were what I expected. I answered them the best I could, all in all I was a little stunned. They were reading their questions from notes they had taken. Um mm, why can't we take notes into an interview! Wouldn't my answers be what they wanted to hear.
That is the million dollar question, what is it that they want to hear, they know in their minds what they want us to say, so if we don't say what they want to hear, do we totally get skipped over, and what if no-one says what they want to hear, what then.
I have been thinking positive about the job, and envisioning myself in this job, and finally saying to myself I have this job.
This whole job searching is stressful, why can't they just give me the job after-all I want the job, and I am qualified for the job.
If only we lived in a perfect world!

My Vision Board

I have these two on my Vision Board, among other things. I would like a screen house so we could sit outside and not get bitten by all those mosquitos, and this garage/barn would look so nice in our yard. We have a Vision Board, and we put pictures of the things we want/need, and we look at them everyday and envision that we have them. I'm still envisioning these. A girl can dream can't she!!

As soon as she was discovered, she was immediately rescued and brought to the East Veterinary Group. She was so grateful and affectionate that she won the hearts of all who met her in an instant and it was observed over a month's at the vet's that she loves adults, children and other dogs and never growls at anyone even strangers:

My Aunt Louise passed away Sunday the 20th, at home with her family, she was 85. This was my mothers older sister. My mom passed away 11 years ago from ALS at the young age of 67. We went to her calling hours last night and this morning to the funeral. During her last hour of life, she saw my mom, her mom and Jesus, she told her family she saw them, and they were waiting for her. I makes my heart feel good, knowing she saw my mom and my mom was waiting for her sister to welcome her into the spiritual world. She will be missed by her family! God Bless!

BEE SKEP~FINISHED

I promised a finsihed picture of the Bee Skeps that Laura and I made. These were both made using the orange plastic cones, one cone was taller than the other. Before they dry completely, remove them from the cones by flipping them over, these didn't release completely right away, it took a little rough handling by banging on the cone, they finally released. We used a couple different tools trying to find the best one to scribe the lines in. This is our first attempt, we are going to make some more, next time we are going to remove them from the cones sooner so the scribing goes easier. Laura has her's in her garden area. I'm going to go to her house and get some picutres of her beautiful flowers for you to see! Enjoy, try making some for yourself, they were not difficult at all, the only time consuming part was making the lines.

Monday~Monday I mentioned that I was going to make some concrete Bee Skeps for my Bee Skep house that my husband and my son had made me. This project for us is new, we have never made anything with concrete, never mind Bee Skeps. Well, my friend Laura, and I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought 2 bags of concrete, we had good intentions of finishing these all in one day. By the time we got the concrete and had the nice man at Home Depot put it in my car, you see we thought we could carry 80 Lbs of dry concrete, not one bag but two, well that wasn't happening, anyways we needed help.

Around 7pm we started mixing the concrete with water, and you can see my husband helped mix the bags for us. We shoveled the concrete into these Orange cones, and found a level spot so that they could dry, by the time we did all this it was 8PM, and the mosquito's were bit ting. We went into the house and thought about how we were going to finish these, you see we still needed to remove them from the cones and scribe them with lines, so that they resemble bee skeps, all before they completely dried. We decided that all that would have to wait until morning or afternoon.

Well, today we removed them from the cones, mind you it is in the 90's today and humid, we sat under a large umbrella and began to work our magic. I will post a finished picture in my next post!

Historical importance ~ The importance of bees, hasn't changed in more than three hundred years. We know that without bees, we could not have grown the watermelon, asparagus and apple crops that were documented. Farming neighbors, were dependent on annual pollination by the swarms of tiny insects that facilitated such succulent plant life in fields and orchards.
On a very basic level, one might even argue that bees were as crucial to the survival and development of early society in this county as were things like horses, muskets, ferry boats and grist mills. Without healthy bee population human inhabitants would have been without fundamental foodstuffs and economic staples like corn, squash, pumpkins and carrots. The story of the honey bee, is really the story of human agriculture -- and it hardly gets more historic than that.

Hot, Hot, Summer Day

Too hot to do much of anything today, we cooked out on the grill, had cheesburgers. The humidity here makes it seem hotter than it is. The yard needs to be cut but not today, it will have to wait. Remember your fur babies and make sure they are all inside where its cool, and that they have lots of water. This is where I wish I was today!

Colonial housewives and cooks began their days very early by modern standards. They built the fire, carried water, gathered fresh fruits and vegetables for the day's meals from the kitchen garden, got meat from the smokehouse, and prepared breakfast. This meal usually consisted of mush with milk, which was sweetened with molasses. The mid-day meal, dinner, was the heaviest, generally served between noon and 3 pm. This meal was commonly a stew, the ingredients of which varied with the seasons. The advantage of serving stew was that it required little tending from the housewife and required only one pot. Puddings could also be steamed in fabric bags suspended above the cooking pot of stew. Individual portions of meat and vegetables were uncommon in the colonies until the 1700's, and then were had by well-to-do colonists. Supper, the evening meal, was generally warmed up leftovers.
Women trained girls to be wives and mothers by having them help around the house. Girls helped with cooking, preserving food, caring for children, cleaning the house, washing clothes and gardening. They milked cows, churned butter, and made cheese. Girls' work was important to cloth making. After the men and boys grew flax and sheared sheep, girls and single women did the spinning, knitting, sewing, and sometimes weaving. Girls spun wool and flax so that it could be woven into fabric or knitted into socks, hats, scarves, and mittens. They usually brought yarn to weavers to have cloth woven and they used the cloth to make clothing and sacks. Girls sewed by hand, with strong, tiny stitches that would hold clothes together during many washings over years of wear. Most girls became wives and mothers who worked on the farm and in the house. Some became midwives, servants, tavernkeepers, or school mistresses. Girls could not go to college.
